Goin' Back to Boston Back to the JamesGriffinArchives.com Home Page
On April 9, 1998, Jimmy, along with Terry Sylvester (of The Hollies) and Don Brewer (of Grand Funk Railroad) played a benefit concert here in Boston (along with Bill Kelly of The Buoys and Dakota.) It was titled "Rock with the Jocks" and featured music, a silent auction of music and sports memorabilia, and appearances by members of the Boston Celtics. It was a benefit to raise money to help revitalize inner-city neighborhoods and was co-sponsored by the Boston Celtics and the Fannie Mae Foundation.
The format of the show itself was that each of the three stars performed three of their signature songs with a few other tunes thrown in to round out the show. My only regret is that I didn't videotape the songs!!!
Jimmy sang "For All We Know", "Mother Freedom" and "Everything I Own."
Terry sang "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", "Carrie Ann" and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."
Don sang "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "We're An American Band."
| One of the major points of the night was to raise money through a silent auction. Here is an autographed shirt that was one of the items up for bid. | ![]() |

Don steps out from behind the drum kit to lead the way. The musicians were WAY more friendly and obliging than most of the athletes were. They signed everything, posed for pictures with anyone who asked and Don even gave out about half a dozen drumsticks! (Yep - I got one!) |

Jimmy and Terry share vocals.
It was a great thrill to meet Terry and I was really glad to get my copy of "Griffin and Sylvester" signed by each. |

Jim Della Croce (you may remember that name from Jimmy's days with The Remingtons) played drums on a few of the songs. He had the winning bid on the specially designed Boston Celtics electric guitar: $5,000. |

| Billy Kelly can be seen here in the white shirt. He was very friendly and I got to talk to him after the show. Jimmy and I ate dinner at The Palms restaurant and Billy joined us about halfway through dinner. | ![]() |

Jimmy commented on how much energy Don had and how different Grand Funk Railroad was from Bread. He did his drum solo standing up!! |

| This was the obligatory group shot at the end of the show. Standing next to Don Brewer (with the shades on) is Peter Wolf, former lead singer of the J. Geils band - a very popular group "way back when" especially here in the Boston area. | ![]() |
